kōmutu, kōmotu, n. Stub of firewood unconsumed by the fire.

E tari mai koe i tēnā au kōmutu ‘ei tāngutu i te a‘i.
Bring over those bits of wood that didn’t burn up to stoke the fire with;

Kua tāuru ‘aia i te kōmutu mā‘ū ki roto i te a‘i.
He put the damp bits of wood (left over from a previous fire) on the fire.
