‘ōniāni

‘ōniāni, n.

1. Onion.

Kua tupu meitaki tāna ‘ōniāni.
His onions have grown well;

‘ē rua paunu ‘ōniāni,
two pounds of onions.

2. Nut grass or onion grass (Cyperus rotundus): a sedge whose narrow underground rhizome produces numerous tubers difficult to eradicate.

Kāre e rauka te ‘ōniāni i te vāere, kua kako ‘ua tēia ‘enua.
You can’t get rid of the nut grass, the ground is infested with it. (See tā‘ōniāni.) [Eng. onion.]
