The ships sailed for shelter;

It is a sheltered place that’s why all the goats are gathered there. ‘Ākoko ruru, a sheltered nook.

2. Blocked, shut out, dropped (of the wind).

E ‘akatū i tēnā pi‘a kia ruru te matangi.
Stand those crates up on end to keep the wind out;

‘Ea‘a rā te matangi i ruru ei i teia tūruā‘ipō?
Why has the wind dropped in the depth of the night like this?
