tāiva1, tāriva, v.i.

1. (Be) steep, precipitous, sheer.

‘E tāiva ‘ua tēnā ngā‘i ‘auraka e nā reira.
It’s very steep there, don’t go that way;

‘e ‘ivi tāiva ‘ua,
a steep-sided ridge.

2. n. A gorge, chasm, ravine.

Kua topa ‘aia ki raro i te tāiva.
He fell down a steep gorge.
